The little boy in the middle of this photo is my grandmother's brother, Laurel Jenkins Malone. He was born on May 18th, 1914, making him about four years old when this picture was made. As far as I know, this is the only surviving photograph of him. Laurel contracted meningitis and died from complications on May 7, 1920, a little less than two weeks before his sixth birthday and only seven days after my grandmother was born on April 30th. There is a lifetime of heartache in that one sentence. My grandmother only knew about her brother Laurel from the stories her parents told her - that he was a sweet little boy who was loved very much.
