Cleo Malone Hurst
1920
The best thing about my birthday has always been that I got to share it with my Grandma. She was born Friday, April 30, 1920 and I was born Friday, April 30, 1971. Grandma lived long enough to celebrate 88 birthdays and 37 of them we got to celebrate together, something for which I am very grateful. The pictures below are from our 1976 birthday - I was five and Grandma was 56. That pink cake in the middle of the table is my mother's famous strawberry cake - a birthday favorite! The lopsided cake in the photo on the bottom right is my Grandma's applestack cake which was also one of my favorites, I think partly because they were always lopsided.
I miss my Grandma most during the month of April and most especially on our birthday. I have all 38 birthday cards that Grandma ever gave me. I have 38 cards (even though we only shared 37 birthdays) because for my birthday in 2008, the last one we would celebrate together, Grandma sent me two cards. In the second one she wrote a note saying she couldn't remember if she mailed me a card and she wanted to make sure I got one. She also signed it with lots of X's and O's (for hugs and kisses) - like every year.

Happy Birthday, Grandma!
I Love You Very Much!

Oh, Julie. My heart aches reading this. I love that you have all of the cards. You are awesome.

Emily and her daddy share a birthday, too, and we also always have the two cakes. AND one of them is usually MY famous strawberry cake! Thanks for sharing your sweet memories, and happy birthday again!
