M-O-U-S-E

Some of our less then happy Disney moments.
Still, an unhappy day at Disney can be a pretty good day.

Very unhappy that
"The Bear in the Big Blue House"
left the stage.

Very itchy.
This was the day we discovered
Owen has a sunscreen allergy.
Also, Benadryl makes him hyper.
Not the best combo.

"Get me off this carousel. Now!"

Leaving the Magic Kingdom after
both children had spectacular tantrums on Main Street.
I took this photo because Owen was so mad that
this little boy was talking to his sister.
His name was George and he
had an English accent.

A few minutes later on the ferry.
Over it.  Completely.

I call this photo
"All dressed up to go out and throw a BIG tantrum in public."
This evening has gone down in memory as one of our
worst out-and-about tantrum experiences ever.
Good times.

Owen: "Those cars are too loud."
Sarah: "What did you say?"
Owen: "I wanna go now."
Sarah: "What did you say?"

Acres of empty seats and she
insisted on sitting right next to him.
She also stole his hat.
He was unamused.

"It's too hot to be here & I need a diet coke. Now."

Lots of little girl tears
at the end of the
Pirate and Princess Party.
She did not want to go home.

Not so excited about
meeting Buzz Lightyear.

Owen: "This boat is too slow.  I wanted to take the monorail."
Sarah: "I thought you said we were riding on a fairy."

"This is NOT a Princess Park."

This is what happens when the roller coaster stops in the middle.
We had to walk out.

In the Emergency Room at Disney.
He had no problem getting an IV until he realized
they were going to use a needle.
He almost convinced them he was better . . . almost.

While waiting with Sarah at the ER . . .
Sarah: "Do they have a dolphin tank?"
Me: "I don't think so."
Sarah: "Are there whales here?"
Me: "No."
Sarah: "Yeah, this is boring. Can we go now?"
She said that one about a million times.

Bracelet Buddies.
Owen lost so much weight that
his shorts kept falling off him.
It was a long week.

Goofy.

M-I-C-K-E-Y

We're going to Disney World on Friday and I am so so excited!  Boy oh boy do I love Disney trips.  Love them!  I am fully aware that I have bought into all the marketing hype when I say this, but I do believe that DisneyWorld is the happiest place on earth.

On our most recent trip to Disney in May, we spent the last two nights of our stay at the Contemporary Resort's Bay Lake Tower.  We could see Cinderella's Castle and Space Mountain from our room.  It was awesome.

Of course even the "Happiest Place On Earth"
isn't happy every single second you are there.
We've had our share of unhappiness at Disney.
If you're interested, check back tomorrow to see some
of our less than happy moments.

"I don't feel very good."
He wasn't kidding either.

The Hurst Nation

The Hurst Nation
Located in Northwest McNairy County, Tennessee

As I wander through the internet searching for information about my relatives, it's sometimes difficult to separate the facts of a person's life from the lore that has built up around time in which they lived. We "see through a glass darkly" when we try to piece together the lives of our ancestors. Take for example my great-uncle to the sixth power, Col. Fielding Hurst.  He is a man with a complicated legacy.

Some "truths" about Fielding Hurst (according to http://www.fieldinghurst.com/) are that he was a Union loyalist who led a cavalry regiment during the Civil War that earned a reputation for doling out harsh punishment on his Confederate neighbors.  He and his regiment are credited/blamed for burning parts of Jackson, TN and for burning his hometown of Purdy. The fact that Fielding's house survived the burning of Purdy probably didn't do much to endear him to his Confederate neighbors. Years after his death his name continued to be villified in his home county, so much so that the historical marker pictured above was rejected by the town of Purdy and had to be placed along Highway 54 South in Bethel Springs instead. Perhaps the marker would have been better received if it read:

"In this section lived numerous members of the Hurst family,
who betrayed their Confederate brethren
and fought for the Yankee north.
Its most notorious member was Col. Fielding Hurst,
commander of the renegade 6th Tenn. Calvalry,
a traitorous Union group
which pillaged and plundered
for various Federal commanders in the area."

Here is a link to some additional information
about Fielding Hurst's home in Purdy, Tennessee.

Put Down the Cookie

Cookies I'm Not Eating

One month from today I'm going on a spring break trip with my family to someplace warm and sunny where I won't be wearing bulky pullovers and I might have to sit by a pool.  This means that today was Day One of my Spring Break diet. I didn't cheat at all which meant that I was hungry and cranky and I spent a good deal of my afternoon thinking about NOT  eating a cookie.  Or four.  Earlier this afternoon, Joel was going to eat a chocolate chip cookie and I might have yelled at him - "You can't eat that cookie . . . I'm on a diet!"  There's a passage in the Bible that talks about dieting (it's in Matthew). Jesus says that when we're fasting (dieting), we shouldn't make it obvious.  We shouldn't walk around all miserable and disheveled telling everybody how hard it is that we're fasting (dieting).  We should keep it to ourselves and we'll be rewarded later. I will admit that this is good advice and dieting gracefully is something I will work on tomorrow.  Today's reward was making my husband put down a chocolate chip cookie.  He really wanted that cookie too - almost as much as I did.

Thank Goodness for Cameras

I'm looking back through photos today
of my sweet baby girl.
This one was taken on her birth day in 2004.

This is one of my favorites of Owen and Sarah Grace.
He looks so angelic and all the while he's
reaching out to steal theWinnie-the-Pooh
that's in her bassinet.

He spent the weeks before she was
born telling me over and over
that he didn't want a baby sister.
His exact words . . . "No baby sister!"
Although he would never admit it
out loud where anybody would hear him say it,
I think she's grown on him in the last seven years.

One last bedtime as a six year old.
Tomorrow she will be seven and she'll
begin a whole new year of adventures.
I've said it over and over again this week,
but where does the time go?
I cannot believe that my Sweet Baby Grace is seven.
Thank goodness for cameras.

Beach Blues

Orange Beach
on a sunny day.

Feeling homesick for the beach today.
I am not a winter hater (I actually love cold weather
and snow) but today I keep thinking
about the beach and about how
wonderful it is when we're all there together.
I miss the beach.
